Rail count is the main decision on split rail. Two rails suit a boundary or a decorative run; three hold larger animals more reliably. It changes both the price and what the fence can actually do, so it is worth settling early.

On a long pasture run the straight sections are the easy part. Corners and gate posts take the strain of every rail pulling against them, so they are set deeper and braced harder than the rest — and it is where a cheap job shows itself first, usually within a season.

Split rail is chosen for two quite different reasons and the rail count follows from which one applies. As a boundary or a decorative edge along a drive or a property line, two rails do the job and keep the look open — the fence marks without enclosing. As containment for larger animals, three rails hold more reliably, because an animal that can get its head through a gap will usually try. Posts and bracing change with it, since a fence that is leaned on carries load the decorative version never sees. Split rail also suits uneven ground better than panel fencing, which is part of why it keeps appearing on acreage where a rigid run would leave gaps at every dip.
