Fence replacement.

Panels and pickets are cheap to replace; posts are not. If the posts are still solid, a repair is nearly always the better buy. When the posts have gone — leaning, rotted at ground level, or pulling out — you are rebuilding the fence around bad foundations, and that is the point at which replacement stops being the expensive option.

Removal and haul-off is the part people forget when comparing a replacement to a new build. It is real work — old posts set in concrete do not come out easily — and it belongs in the quote rather than appearing as a surprise.

A replacement is the one chance to change height, material or layout without paying twice. If the old fence was the wrong height, or the gate was in the wrong place, say so before we start rather than rebuilding the same problem.

The test is the posts. Individual broken pickets, a sagging gate or a couple of damaged panels are repairs, and repairs are worth doing when the structure underneath is sound. Once posts are rotted, leaning or moving when pushed, the arithmetic changes: replacing posts means pulling the fence apart anyway, and a patchwork of new posts under old boards tends to mean returning to the same fence again in a year or two. The other honest signal is how many repairs you have already paid for. A fence that has been fixed three times is usually telling you what it needs. Walking the line and pushing on posts every few feet will answer this faster than any estimate.
