A fence keeping cattle in and a fence marking a property line are built differently. Livestock decides height, spacing and how solid the corners have to be, because the animals lean on it; a boundary run can be lighter. Saying which one you need is the single most useful thing on a first call.

On acreage the cost is in linear feet, so the choice of material matters more than it does on a back garden. Split rail suits pasture and grazing; chain-link covers ground cheaply where containment matters more than looks. We build both, and on a long run it is worth walking the line before deciding.

Slope, soft ground and standing water all change how posts have to be set. A fence line that crosses a low spot or a drainage cut needs planning rather than improvising on the day, which is why we would rather look at it than quote it blind.

A boundary fence marks a line; a containment fence resists an animal pushing against it, and the two are built differently even when they look similar from the road. Posts are set deeper and closer, corners and gate posts are braced because that is where the load concentrates, and the rail count is chosen for what is being held rather than for appearance. Two rails suit a boundary or a decorative run. Three hold larger animals more reliably. Pasture also tends to mean longer runs over uneven ground, which changes how the line is laid out — following the contour rather than cutting across it keeps the fence tight and keeps gaps from opening at the low points where an animal will find them.
